About Us
(3) The Public Scholar
A Public Scholar is someone who uses the tools and resources of scholarship and investigation in order to respond to ongoing problems that affect the local and global communities of which s/he is a member. The work of a Public Scholar is not confined to the classroom or the library, instead her/his work affects conversations and processes of change in the courts, in the councils, in the streets, and in the homes of everyday people. In order for a public scholar to be able to respond to the lives of members of his/her community, the Public Scholar must constantly connect with and be accountable to the communities.
At the Engaged University, we are interested in working with Public Scholars and we are Public Scholars ourselves. We are committed to having sustained and meaningful conversations with community members and decision-makers based on reliable information.
