Community Partners Program

Our Programs

University Student Engagement

An important objective of the Engaged University’s work is to encourage and support the engagement of University students in the life of the surrounding community and the larger society in which they live.  To advance this objective, we collaborate on and off campus on a number of projects and activities that support the growth of student leadership skills and provide university students with hands-on community-based civic engagement experiences.

In 2006, we conducted a workshop for student activists to help them explore and follow ”their passion“.   We also brought a number of activists on campus to provide students with first hand accounts from people in the trenches.

In 2007, our focus was to support the expansion of the Alternative Spring Break (ASB) program to include a local component in Prince George’s County, a joint project of the Engaged University and the Office of Student Involvement in the Office of Campus Programs.

In March 2007, 10 UM students worked on a community gardening program at the University’s new Center for Educational Partnership.  Four Engaged University employees provided staff support for three different ASB trips.

In 2008, we hope to help provide a more comprehensive Prince George's County ASB experience.
