Collaboration with College Park Scholars — (CPS) Afterschool Program

College Park Scholars is a community of twelve special living-learning programs for academically talented first- and second-year students. Each program focuses on a specific theme and offers specially designed courses and experiences that relate to its theme. Students in College Park Scholars take classes together and live together in selected residence halls.

For the past two academic years, the Engaged University has collaborated with the College Park Scholars (CPS) Public Leadership Program, and William Wirt, Nicholas Orem and Charles Carroll Middle Schools. Each year, as part of their academic program, 75 first-year college students in the Public Leadership program spent two hours per week partnering with middle school students on an experiential learning project of mutual interest. In the 06-07 academic years, students received one academic credit per semester to explore the issue of immigration and migration through the eyes and experiences of real people who are most impacted by the issue.

In 2007/8, CPS Public Leadership students will work on a variety of different projects with William Wirt Middle School students at the Center for Educational Partnership. They will aslo work with students at Charles Carroll and with Nicholas Orem Middle Schools.

The collaboration with the College Park Scholars program is a University-Assisted Community Schools initiative. Future collaborations will provide opportunities for students from some of the other CPS programs as well who want to connect with the local community.
